Civil, Jewish and faith-based rights organizations strongly condemn anti-Muslim animosity and call on Senate committee to vote on Dilawar Syed’s nomination

WASHINGTON – The Leaders’ Conference on Civil and Human Rights, Bend the Arc: Jewish Action, and prominent civil, Jewish and faith-based organizations and leaders today strongly denounced the blatant anti-Muslim animosity against Dilawar Syed and his appointment. history as Deputy Administrator of the United States Small Business Administration (SBA). In a letter At the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee (SBC), organizations and leaders called on the committee to take swift action and vote on Mr. Syed’s appointment.

“Due to the overwhelming evidence affirming Mr. Syed’s business acumen and qualifications to fill this role, it appears that the Republicans on the committee unfortunately turned to character assassination in the form of anti-Muslim prejudice and fanaticism to thwart its confirmation, ”the organizations and leaders wrote.

In the letter, organizations and leaders describe a deeply troubling set of facts revealing Republican Senate staff trying to arm the Muslim religion and Mr. Syed’s birthplace, and falsely claim he is not qualified for the position. The organizations highlighted a barrage of denunciations from across the country, including from Jewish communities, against deeply offensive and unsubstantiated allegations against Mr. Syed, claiming that “notable Jewish groups from all walks of life, including the American Jewish Committee and the Anti-Defamation League, among many others, continue to support Mr. Syed because they recognize that the anti-Muslim bias against him stems from the same white nationalism that was displayed, and encouraged the uprising against democracy in our nation, on January 6, 2021.

Calling on the Senate committee to act quickly to put Mr. Syed’s nomination to a vote, organizations and executives wrote: “Unfortunately, the delay in this confirmation has been accompanied by tangible losses for small American businesses, including dozens. thousands of businesses devastated by the pandemic. They added, “The longer the Senate delays reviewing this appointment, the more irreparable damage will be done to hardworking Americans when they need your help the most.” “

If confirmed, Mr. Syed would become the most senior American Muslim in the Biden administration to date.
