Video: In his Speech to the Black Money-Fueled ‘Federalist Society’, Youngkin claims (incorrectly) that the greatest threat to our democracy comes more from ‘Cancellation Culture’ than from ‘Tyrants’ like Putin

If there was any doubt about who and what Glenn Youngkin is – and it’s completely laughable to call him a ‘moderate’ in any way – watch the speech he gave last night at UVA, some “highlights” of the speech, as well as some reactions. But first, notice who Youngkin was talking to – THAT group.

For two decades, [Leonard] Leo has been on a mission to travel back in time to the United States Supreme Court steadily expanding the government’s authority and approving new rights such as abortion and same-sex marriage. Now like Unofficial legal adviser to President Trumphe told the public at the closed-door event in February that they needed to step up in “very new ways” to help finish the job.

[Leo] is widely known as a confidant of Trump and as executive vice president of the Federalist Society, an influential nonprofit for conservative and libertarian lawyers with close ties to Supreme Court justices. But behind the scenes, Leo is the maestro of a network of interlocking nonprofits working on media campaigns and other initiatives to influence lawmakers by generating public support for conservative justices.

The story of Leo’s rise offers an inside look at the modern machinery of political persuasion. It shows how undisclosed interests outside of government are exploiting the national nonprofit system to influence judicial appointments that will shape the nation for decades.

So that’s the group – the Federalist Society (“an operation funded by black money and designed to remake our justice system on behalf of a distinct group of very wealthy anonymous backers…almost 90% of Trump’s appellate justices, and his two Supreme Court justices, are members of the so-called Federalist Society. At the Supreme Court, Kavanaugh, Gorsuch, Alito, Thomas? – all are members) — who Youngkin was talking to at UVA last night. As for what Youngkin had to say, and some reactions, see the video below.

  • “It’s such an honor to be in the presence of so many esteemed conservative federal judges who embody what it means to uphold the constitution instead of rewrite it.
  • “When you look at extremism and dysfunction in Washington these days. a reaction of discouragement – even alarm – sometimes seems justified.
  • “…we found that a number of Democrats [actually, just two out of 69, but who’s counting? LOL] okay… with the logic and fairness of the position. They decided to follow the parents instead of toeing the party line. So on February 16, just a month after my appointment as the 74th Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, I enacted a bipartisan law resolving the mask war in favor of parents. Let the parents decide.
  • The greatest threat to our democracy today does not come from tyrants abroad – but let me tell you that Vladimir Putin is a tyrant – the greatest threat to our democracy [Applause]…stems from a growing tendency to hate rather than listen. [Applause] Friends, this comes from a desire to intimidate, not to persuade. Such a culture of contempt, this culture of cancellation is toxic to our democracy, and unless the schools that exist to teach our young people take responsibility for being a solution, our democracy will indeed be in jeopardy.

Now, of course, this is all complete nonsense. And, as usual, Youngkin is full of it, not to mention intellectually speaking. On this, here are some reactions, in particular:

  • VAPLAN:So his greatest achievement is sow chaos and division by trying to change the rules of the mask and ultimately changing them along with the@CDCgovsaid?
  • the Arlington County Democratic Committee: “Governor Youngkin is more concerned about cancel culture than Putin.
  • Executive Director DPVA Andrew Whitley: “The irony and hypocrisy of@GlennYoungkin to criticize Washington’s policy at the institution where his administration fired an employee for purely partisan reasons is incredibly tone-deaf. Glenn talks about this good game but his actions never follow.
  • Rachel Levy for Delegate: “No @GovernorVA , federalism does not mean undermining local government. And “cancel culture” is not the “real threat” to democracy from autocrats like Tr*mp and Putin. My God.”

PS It’s also worth noting that the audience was asked to wear masks, and many/most refused and someone booed loudly. And Youngkin, of course, showed up without a mask, even though that’s UVA policy.
