Vigil planned for Lafayette civil rights leader Fred Prejean

A vigil is scheduled this week for one Fred Prejean, a civil rights leader from Lafayette, who died last week.

Move the Mindset will hold a candlelight vigil in honor of Prejean who was also president of Move The Mindset

Préjean died on Thursday January 27, 2022. He was 76 years old.

The public is invited to attend a vigil on Thursday, February 2, 2022 at 6 p.m. The vigil will be held at the former site of the Mouton statue in downtown Lafayette.

He was instrumental in founding Move the Mindset, an organization that used public pressure and legal filings to bring about the removal of a Jim Crow-era Confederate statute from downtown Lafayette.

This statue fell last year, and Prejean was there to watch it.

COVID precautions will be in place during the vigil. The public is asked to wear masks and keep a social distance.

In the event of rain, the organizers say they will proceed as normal. Participants should bring umbrellas

Candles will be provided.
